Free Adobe Acrobat alternative: edit and sign PDFs online
You have a PDF form from your landlord, your school or your HR team. You need to type your name, add today’s date, sign at the bottom and send it back. Most people think of Adobe Acrobat first. It is the best known PDF software, and Adobe has a free online version too. But that free version uploads your file to Adobe and asks you to sign in before you can download the result.
If all you need is to add text and a signature, our free PDF editor can do it inside your browser. The file stays on your phone or computer. There is no account, no upload and no watermark.
This guide compares the two fairly. You will see where Acrobat is the better choice, where a simple browser tool is enough, and how to fill and sign a PDF step by step.
What most people actually need
For everyday documents, the list is short:
- Type text on a form: your name, ID number, address and date.
- Add a signature, drawn with your finger or mouse, or typed.
- Hide a mistake or a detail before you share the file.
- Highlight a line or draw a box around a figure.
- Save a clean PDF you can email or upload to a portal.
Rewriting paragraphs inside a PDF is a different job. We cover it below, because that is where Acrobat Pro clearly wins.

Where Adobe Acrobat is the better choice
Acrobat is a full PDF suite, and for some jobs you should use it:
- Changing the original text. If a contract has a typo in the third paragraph and you must fix the real words, Acrobat Pro can edit the text and fonts. Our editor cannot.
- Scanned documents. Acrobat Pro uses OCR to turn a scan into searchable, editable text. Our editor treats a scan as a picture.
- Real redaction. If you must remove a bank account number so nobody can recover it, use a true redaction tool such as the one in Acrobat Pro. Our white-out draws a white box on top. The text underneath may still be inside the file.
- Signature workflows. If you send leases to ten tenants and need reminders and a record of who signed, Acrobat’s e-signature tools are built for that.
- Certificate based digital signatures. Adobe says Acrobat supports digital signatures that use a certificate based digital ID. Some regulated forms need this. A drawn signature is not the same thing.
If your work looks like this every week, a paid Acrobat plan may be worth it. Adobe shows the price for your country on its pricing page.
Where a browser tool is enough
Now think of a common case. You get a 3 page tenancy form as a PDF. You need to write your name and Emirates ID or Iqama number on page 1, tick two boxes, sign page 3 and send it back within the hour.
With Adobe’s free online editor, you upload the file, sign in to an Adobe account, finish the form, then download it. That works well if you already use Adobe.
With our editor, you open the page, pick the file and start typing. The PDF never leaves your phone. That matters when the form holds your passport number, salary or bank details.
It also helps if you write in Arabic, Urdu or Hindi. The editor embeds Noto fonts in the saved PDF, so Arabic letters join correctly and right to left text keeps its order. Urdu is saved in Naskh style, not Nastaliq.
How to fill and sign a PDF with the Free Adawat editor
- Open the PDF editor and choose your file. If the PDF has a password, the editor will not open it, so use a copy without the password.
- Use Prev and Next to go to the page you need.
- Pick Text, type in the text box, then tap the page where it should go. Drag it into place and use the corner handle to make it bigger or smaller. For a checkbox, type an X and place it on the box.
- Pick Sign. Draw your signature with a finger or mouse, or switch to Type and enter your name. Tap Insert, then drag and resize the signature.
- If you made a mistake on the original, pick White-out, cover it, then add new text on top.
- Use Highlight, Rectangle or Pen if you want to mark something for the reader. Undo and Delete fix any slip.
- Tap Save PDF. You get a new file named like your original with “-edited” at the end.
Do you need to send several pages as one file? After you save, the page offers a next step. You can hand the file straight to Merge PDF to join it with other documents, or to Compress PDF if a portal limits the file size. The hand off also happens on your device.
Privacy: what happens to your file
Adobe is clear about its online tools. Its help page says Acrobat online services upload your files to Adobe cloud storage. If you sign in, the file is saved to your Adobe account. If you do not sign in, Adobe says it deletes the file from its servers soon after. Adobe also says it uses AES-256 encryption and TLS 1.2 for these services, and that stored files are private unless you share them.
Our editor works in a different way. The page loads the editing code into your browser. Your PDF is read, edited and saved on your device. We do not receive a copy, so there is nothing for us to store or delete. You need an internet connection to open the page, but the editing itself does not use our server.
A quick checklist before you send
- Zoom in and check that every line of text sits on the right line of the form.
- Make sure your signature is on the correct page.
- Do not rely on white-out to hide sensitive numbers. If the receiver must never see them, remove them at the source or use a true redaction tool.
- Open the saved PDF once before you email it.
For a short form, a lease page or a school letter, a free browser editor is usually all you need. For deep text editing, OCR and signature tracking, Acrobat Pro is the stronger tool. Pick the one that fits the job in front of you.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free alternative to Adobe Acrobat for signing PDFs?
Yes. The Free Adawat PDF editor lets you draw or type a signature, place it anywhere on the page and save a new PDF. It is free, needs no account and works inside your browser, so the file is not uploaded.
Can I edit the existing text in a PDF for free?
Not with our editor, and not with Adobe's free online editor either. Adobe says editing existing text needs Acrobat Pro. In our editor you can cover the old words with white-out and type new text on top.
Is a drawn signature on a PDF legally valid?
It depends on the country and on who receives the document. Many landlords, schools and employers accept a drawn signature, but some government or bank forms need a certificate based digital signature. This is general information, not legal advice, so check with the receiver if you are unsure.
Do my files get uploaded when I use the Free Adawat PDF editor?
No. The page loads the editor into your browser, and your PDF is opened, edited and saved on your own phone or computer. Nothing is sent to our server.
